Abstract
This study was conducted in order to determine osteoporotic female elders` intention to continuous exercise and to clarify factors influencing it. The study was a descriptive study with 194 elderly women aged 61~80, who were diagnosed with osteoporosis and an exercise therapy was recommended. Data were collected from June 17 to July 26, 2013 using a structured self-report questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and hierarchical multiple regression. According to the results, first, the score for the subjects` intention to continuous exercise was 5.70. Their intention to continuous exercise was higher educational level, economic level, knowledge of osteoporotic exercise, self-efficacy, social support, and physical help as well as better perceived health status and educational experiences related to osteoporosis. Second, the explanatory power of the predictive model involving all of the demographic and osteoporosis exercise-related factors and cognitive and environmental factors was 23.7%, and the subjects` perceived health status, osteoporosis related educational experience, self-efficacy, expectation of results, and social support were identified as main factors having influence. We expect that the results of this study will be helpful in understanding the importance of practice of continuous exercise by osteoporotic female elders, and will be used as basic data for development of exercise programs to increase self-efficacy and social support for their continuous exercise.
